The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih has thrown his weight behind the New Patriotic Party’s, (NPP’s) parliamentary candidate for the Wa Central Constituency.
Dr. Bin Salih described the candidate, Hajia Humu Awudu as the best person to wrestle power from the incumbent MP for Wa Central, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo.
He said as the first female selected on the ticket of the NPP, he was confident that after Election 2020, she will become the first female MP for the Upper West Region.
Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih was quick to add that winning the Wa Central seat would require a united party front.
He therefore rallied for support from the women to also endorse Hajia Humu Awudu’s candidature and in turn vote massively for her.
The Regional Minister said this while speaking at the maiden Upper West Regional Women’s Wing Annual Conference which was anchored on “Empowering the women front for 2020 and beyond”.
The Conference was to talk about the challenges facing the women wing of the party, celebrate the successes while strategizing to secure victory for the NPP in election 2020.
For her part, the NPP Candidate for the Wa Central Constituency, Hajia Humu admitted that being the only female to contest as MP in the entire Upper West Region is a daunting task.
Hajia Awudu was confident that she would be successful in her bid to represent Wa Central in Parliament come 2020.
She therefore called for support saying that she will continue to further the development of women in constituency.
Hajia Humu stated that her involvement in politics in the constituency is to help showcase the courage and dynamism of women in politics thereby breaking the stereotype that women cannot lead or perhaps participate in active politics.
She noted that women can do equally or even better than men in politics, economic development and social inclusiveness.
The NPP Upper West Regional Women Organiser, Diana Puopelle said the contribution of women to socio-economic and political development of Ghana over the years cannot be underestimated.
She said the theme for the occasion was apt as it defines a deliberate pathway for women to be amplified and empowered to make even more contributions towards national development.
Madam Puopelle was full of praise for the Akufo-Addo led government saying the pro-poor and inclusive social interventions already implemented by government in the past 35 months was a huge testament to the government’s commitment to ensure Ghana remains an environment that allows all individuals, particularly women, to develop.
She named the Nation Builders Corp (NABCO), the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) and Free Senior High School as a few of the brilliant interventions from government.
The Dean of MDCE’s in the Upper West Region, Alhaji Issahaku Tahiru Moomen said he was taken aback by National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) decision to vote ‘No’ in the upcoming referendum.
He called on the women to turn up in their numbers on December 17, this year to vote ‘Yes’ for an increased democratic participation.
The Conference was attended by a number of MDCEs including the MCE for Jirapa, Madam Christine Bombanye-Amadu and the DCE for Nadowli-Kaleo, Catherine Teiyirr Lankono. Also in attendance were the Women Wing leaders for the Upper East and North East Regions and the Deputy National Women Organiser, Hajia Sawdatu Saeed.
