President John Dramani Mahama has initiated a consultation process with the Council of State following the receipt of three separate petitions calling for the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice.
A statement issued by the Presidency’s Communications Directorate, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, confirmed the development.
The statement noted that the petitions were submitted by various individuals seeking the Chief Justice’s removal, citing grounds that have not yet been made public.
In accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, the President has forwarded the petitions to the Council of State to commence the mandatory consultation process. Article 146 outlines the procedures for initiating the removal of a Chief Justice or any other superior court judge, requiring the President to act upon receiving a petition by seeking advice from the Council of State.
This move has sparked public interest, as the removal of a Chief Justice is a rare and significant process in Ghana’s legal and political landscape.
More updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
