Queensland International School has emerged as the champion in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the inaugural Rising Star Rugby League U15 Tournament. The school’s impressive performance saw them take the top spot in both categories, with Twedaase School securing runners-up positions in both divisions.

The tournament, organized by the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) in collaboration with Futurestars Charity and Salford Red Devils, provided a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and passion for rugby league.

The event featured five schools, 100 children aged 9-15, and over 20 volunteers. Played in an all-play-all format, a total of 10 games were contested across each division. The tournament’s success has been hailed as a major milestone for rugby league in Ghana, with President of RLFG, Madam Juliana Storey and the deputy British High Commissioner, Keith McMahon emphasizing the significance of the event.

“This is a major milestone for rugby league in Ghana. The passion, determination, and talent we have seen today confirm that we are on the right path in our mission to grow the sport”; Madam Juliana Storey said.

This tournament is a fantastic platform for young athletes to develop their skills and grow the sport in Ghana. The energy and talent on display today were inspiring”; Deputy British High Commissioner, Keith McMahon, commended the initiative.

The tournament’s impact extends beyond the sport itself, with Futurestars Charity Country Leader, Emmanuel Okyne-Tetteh, highlighting the importance of using sports as a tool for youth development.

“At Futurestars, we believe in creating opportunities for children through sports. Seeing these young athletes compete, learn, and enjoy the game today proves how powerful sports can be in shaping the future”; Emmanuel Okyne-Tetteh mentioned.

With its successful debut, the Rising Star Rugby League Tournament is set to become an annual event, giving more young athletes the chance to compete and grow in the sport.

RLFG General Manager, Jafaru Mustapha, expressed excitement about the future of the sport, saying, “The enthusiasm from these young athletes is proof that rugby league has a promising future. We are committed to expanding this tournament and providing more opportunities for young players across Ghana.”
