A heavy rainstorm on Friday, January 24, caused widespread destruction in Tepa Abonsuaso, a community in the Ahafo Ano North Municipality of the Ashanti Region. Four people were injured, and over 70 residents were left homeless as the storm destroyed roofs and damaged more than 20 buildings, including schools.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed the damage, saying their team is assessing the situation and providing support to affected residents.
Frederick Nyamekye, the assembly member for the Abonsuaso electoral area, described the event as a disaster. “Many people have lost the roofs of their buildings, and some, including children in schools, sustained injuries,” he said. Nyamekye also stated that he had reported the situation to the NADMO coordinator and urged NGOs to step in and help the community recover.
Antwi Ernest, NADMO’s Zonal Coordinator for Tepa Abonsuaso, revealed that the rainstorm struck around 7:30 PM, leaving significant destruction in its wake. “So far, four individuals have sustained injuries, 28 houses have been affected, and nearly 70 people are homeless,” he said.
Efforts are ongoing to provide relief to those affected as authorities continue to evaluate the damage. The community is appealing for urgent support to recover from the disaster.
