Samsung Electronics’ co-CEO Han Jong-Hee has passed away at the age of 63 due to cardiac arrest, the company confirmed on Tuesday. Han, a key leader in Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile business, had dedicated more than 37 years to the company.

Han became vice chairman and CEO in 2022, guiding Samsung’s TV, electronics, and home appliance divisions. His leadership helped the company maintain its position as a global leader in technology, even during challenging market conditions.

Following his passing, his co-CEO, Jun Young-Hyun, who was recently appointed to lead Samsung’s semiconductor business, will now serve as the company’s sole CEO.

Samsung paid tribute to Han in an internal message, acknowledging his role in shaping the company’s success. He was credited with pioneering Samsung’s LED TV technology and strengthening its position in the global market.

Han’s passing comes at a time when Samsung faces stiff competition in the semiconductor industry. The company has struggled to keep up with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in advanced chip production and has also fallen behind South Korean rival Hynix in the high-bandwidth memory market, a key technology for AI-driven processors.

Just last week, Han addressed investors at Samsung’s annual meeting, apologizing for the company’s stock performance. He warned of a tough year ahead due to global economic uncertainties but reassured stakeholders that Samsung was committed to strategic mergers and acquisitions to drive growth.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 after earning a degree in electrical engineering from Inha University. Before taking on his leadership role, he played a crucial part in advancing Samsung’s display technologies.

His contributions helped shape Samsung into the powerhouse it is today. The company expressed deep condolences to his family and loved ones, honoring his lifelong dedication to innovation and excellence.
