The Ghana Athletics Association in partnership with the management of the Legon Sports Stadium and the National Sports Authority together with Security Services Sports Association have launched the open Athletics championship.
The launch which was chaired by the acting NSA boss, Seth Panwum Boyoyo said the revival of the sessa games falls in line with the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s national fitness day launched last which is aimed at keeping the citizenry in good health.
He also applauded the stakeholders for taking the initiative to rekindle the once vibrant games that produced athletes who once represented Ghana in international competition.
The president of the Athletics Association of Ghana, Bawa Fusini said this years athletics championship is a platform to once again start the organisation of the SESSA games for the various disciplines within the security services which has been dormant for the past ten years.
He also used the opportunity to appeal to the government through the acting NSA boss consider refurbishment of the Elwak sports stadium especially the titan tracks since the Elwak stadium use to be the original venue for the SESSA games. He said this will require the backing of the government to sustain the games.
The director of sports at the University of Ghana, Dr Austin Luguterah said his outfit is glad to be the host for games. He also retreated that the Legon sports facility will from now be available for other sporting disciplines.
He this is the beginning of partnership between the university of Ghana and Ghana Athletics association to develop performance centres at the Legon stadium to produce and nurture athletes who can represent the country at international level.
The championship will see six security services namely Police service, Prisons Service, Customs, Fire service, Ghana Armed Forces and Immigration Service vying for honours from the 2nd to the 3rd of November 2024.
