President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of a School Sports Authority. This new body aims to oversee structured inter-school competitions and facilitate the identification of talented athletes, paving the way for future sporting champions.

During his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the importance of grassroots sports in nurturing talent and building a robust sports ecosystem. “My government will establish a School Sports Authority. This body will oversee structured inter-school competitions and talent identification essential for nurturing future sporting champions. Over 60% of Ghana’s elite athletes have emerged from these school sport programmes,” he stated.

This initiative aligns with global best practices in sports development, particularly the UNICEF Child Rights Convention, which emphasizes the importance of participation in school sports.

The School Sports Authority will ensure that Ghana adheres to these standards, promoting inclusivity and equitable access to sports programs.

The School Sports Authority initiative will be tipped to address the gap in sports infrastructure and creating pathways for young athletes to excel. With the right implementations in place, Ghana will see a good development of talent as the nation building on producing next generation of sporting heroes, supported by a structured and transparent system.
