The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has announced plans to seek advice from the new Attorney General and Minister for Justice on the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill. He made this statement during an address to the Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire on January 26, 2025.

Bagbin criticised former President Nana Akufo-Addo for not signing the bill into law after it was passed by Parliament, calling the decision unconstitutional. He stressed that only Parliament has the power to pass laws, not the president.

“The LGBTQ bill was passed by Parliament, but the former president refused to sign it, which was unconstitutional. Parliament makes laws—not the president. That decision was wrong, and you all punished him for that,” Bagbin said.

The Speaker reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the bill becomes law this year, emphasising its importance. “I will write to the new Attorney General for his input so we can send the bill to the new president for approval. This will not take long—it will be passed this year. This is about our values and beliefs. I am willing to risk my life for this cause,” he added.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill has been a divisive issue in Ghana, drawing both local and international attention.
