Thailand has officially become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. On January 23,2025, the long awaited marriage equality bill came into effect following royal approval and parliamentary passage late last year. The new law, which uses gender-neutral language, grants same-sex couple, including rights to adoption, inheritance, property ownership and medical decision-making.

A Day of Celebration Across Thailand

The announcement of Thailand’s new marriage equality law has sparked celebrations across major cities including Bangkok, where many same-sex couples participated in public ceremonies. However while some celebrated this milestone, it’s important to acknowledge that not all segments of Thai society support LQBTQ+ rights, reflecting ongoing tension between progressive and conservative views within the country.

A Long Road to Equality

The journey to this achievement has been challenging with LGBTQ+ activist advocating for rights for over two decades. While previous legislation granted limited rights to public support surged in recent years, culminating in the passage of the marriage equality bill by Parliament in 2024.

Global Praise and Regional Impact

Thailand’s decision has garnered international acclaim with leaders like UN Secretary-General António Guterres praising it as a beacon of hope for equality in Southeast Asia.
