The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has announced that following Parliamentary processes, the University of Energy and Natural Resources, (URNR), will be renamed the K.A Busia University of Energy and Natural Resources.
Kofi Abrefa Busia was Prime Minister of Ghana from 1969 to 1972.
As a nationalist leader and Prime Minister, he helped to restore civilian government to the country following military rule.
President Akufo-Addo who made the announcement at the Fourth Congregation of the UENR in Sunyani in the Bono Region, also applauded the plans to establish a medical school at UENR but urged Bono Regions first public university not to deviate too far from its core mandate.
UENR is the Bono-Region’s first Public University mandated to among others undertake Research and the dissemination of knowledge in the field of energy and natural resource exploitation.
The School started with 154 Students in two schools, but currently has 6500 Students studying in seven schools.
The Fourth Congregation saw 1113 students graduating with degrees from seven Schools including the Schools of Natural Resources, Graduate Studies, Engineering and Geo-Studies.
The Guest of Honour and President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo praised the University for its rapid growth and positive impact in such a short time.
He also lauded the decision to establish a medical school at UENR.
The President again noted that the many GETFUND projects at a standstill in various schools is unacceptable and pledged that steps will be taken to reverse the situation.
President Akufo-Addo also stated that come the next Academic Year all students in high Schools will be covered by Free SHS.
He said this will bring the number of students in SHSs’ to One point two million, saying this is the highest number ever of high school students in Ghana’s history.
The President further said Government is to embark on a vigorous expansion of facilities in Tertiary institutions to welcome the first batch of Free SHS products.
The President used the occasion to announce that following the acceptance of a proposal by the Governing Council of the University and after the necessary Parliamentary processes UENR will become the KA Busia University of Energy and Natural Resources.
The Vice Chancellor of UENR, Prof. Harrison Dapaah, in his report to the Congregation outlined activities of the University in recent times.
He also reminded the President about the challenges for which they are seeking his help to address.
Nine Graduates were given awards for their sterling performances and received Certificates, Plaques, Books and cash ranging from 500 to 2000 Ghana Cedis.
Mr. Maxwell Ocloo was adjudged the overall Best Student.
