The Australian High Commission is hosting a West Africa Mining Security Conference to provide mining companies and employees with intelligence on security threats that may impact on the security and safety of the sector.

At a media briefing in Accra, the first Assistant Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade at the Commission, H.K. Yu, said the Australian government is contributing seventy five thousand Australian dollars towards the inter-agency counter terrorism course to be undertaken by the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre.

Ms HK Yu said the conference is important considering the security threat in the sub-region.

“The Australian government is working closely with Transparency International to develop principles for players in the extractive industry.”

The West Africa Mining Security Conference brings together academics, security practitioners, subject matter experts and the mining industry to discuss strategic security trends in the region.

The conference also provide senior executives, operations and security managers with important information to future security and investment decisions.

The two-day conference is expected to provide intelligence on terrorist attack and kidnapping cases in the African sub-region.
