Two promising Ghanaian chess talents, Glenn Johnson Botwe and Alba Karina Quartey, are set to participate in the 2025 World Schools’ Chess Championship in Serbia, thanks to sponsorship from the Danny List Foundation. The young players had initially dropped out of Ghana’s team due to financial constraints, despite qualifying for the prestigious event.
However, the Danny List Foundation stepped in to provide the necessary support, enabling Botwe and Quartey to travel to Serbia and compete against over 700 young players from 43 national federations. The foundation’s chairperson, Madam Angela List, emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting underfunded sports as a tool for youth development, highlighting chess as one of the major sports lacking funding in Ghana.
Madam List expressed her enthusiasm for supporting the young chess players, stating, “The Danny List Foundation has long supported sports development in Ghana, providing sponsorship and resources to talented young players while promoting the game in schools and communities nationwide.” She wished the players success and encouraged them to strive for medals to make Ghana proud.
The sponsorship has been hailed as a lifeline for the young players, who would have otherwise missed out on the opportunity to compete on the global stage. Mr. Phil John Quartey, father of Alba Karina Quartey, expressed his gratitude to Madam Angela List and the foundation for their swift response, as well as to TT Brothers Ghana Limited and Experts Consult Limited for their additional sponsorship.
The World Schools’ Chess Championship is a prestigious international tournament that provides a platform for young players to showcase their skills and compete against the best from around the world. With the support of the Danny List Foundation, Botwe and Quartey will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience, test their skills, and make Ghana proud.
