The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a directive requiring all individuals and entities engaged in illegal mining, both small and large-scale, to stop their activities immediately.

Raising serious concerns about the increasing degradation of water bodies due to unlawful mining operations, the EPA warned that such activities pose major threats to the environment, public health, and Ghana’s natural resources.

In a statement dated January 28, 2025, the agency emphasized that all mining activities must adhere to Ghana’s environmental laws, which require obtaining the necessary permits and adopting sustainable practices to reduce environmental harm.

Citing Sections 2 and 3b(ii) of the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124), the EPA issued an urgent directive for all unauthorized mining activities in water bodies to cease without delay.

To enforce this directive, the EPA is working closely with the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST), the Minerals Commission, the Water Resources Commission, and security agencies. Key enforcement measures include:

• Seize equipment used in illegal mining operations in line with applicable laws.
• Intensify surveillance and inspections of mining sites.
• Prosecute individuals and organizations found violating environmental laws.

The EPA is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal mining activities through its official hotline at 0506699466 or 0506694760.

The EPA reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the country’s water bodies and urged the public to report any instances of illegal mining.
