Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has tipped Cameroon forward Vincent Aboubakar to break the AFCON all-time top-scorer record.
The 29-year-old, who plies his trade, Saudi Arabia, for Al-Nassr, has registered 5 goals in 3 games in the group stages of the 2021 AFCON tournament.
Aboubakar is just 4 goals away from equalling the record set by DR Congo’s Ndaye Mulamba in 1974 when he notched 9 goals in 5 games as the Leopards annexed their second trophy.
Dauda believes the ex-FC Porto star forward is on his way to breaking the record set 48 years ago.
“When you come to a tournament it’s different from playing league games. You don’t have time to prepare. But, Vincent [Aboubakar] so far so good for him. Yesterday, I watched the game, he wasted one good chance. But, it is possible he can break the record of the most goals scored in a single tournament. I learnt the top scorer of the AFCON has scored 9 goals or so,” he told Kwabena Yeboah on GTV Sports+ in the preview of the Malawi vs Senegal game.
Cameroon FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o is the all-time leading scorer of the AFCON tournament with 18 goals from 6 tournaments.
