In the ongoing 2023 African Games, Abubakar Kamoko, the son of retired Ghanaian boxing legend Bukom Banku, has won a medal for his country.

Kamoko, a rival in the 86 kg cruiserweight division, progressed to the semifinals by dispatching his opponent with perseverance. His advancement into the next round already makes him a bronze medalist for Team Ghana.

In the footsteps of his father, who competed in the 1999 African Games in South Africa and earned a bronze medal, Kamoko has already won at least one bronze. Young Kamoko has bigger ambitions in mind, and he wants to win a silver or gold by winning his next matches.

While six other Ghanaian boxers, including Amadu Mohammed (Bantamweight -54 kg) and Samuel Takyi (Light Welterweight -63.5 kg), are still in contention for medals, some athletes, regrettably, were unable to advance past the semifinals in their respective categories. The next round of the boxing events took place yesterday.

Kamoko’s victory adds to the remarkable performance of Ghana’s boxing team at the Games. His amateur boxing teammates Abdul Omar, Daniel Plange, and Henry Malm lost their bouts yesterday.

Joseph Commey,Theophilus Allotey,Mohammed Aryeetey, and Janet Acquah all qualified to the medal round as well. Samuel Takyi and Amadu Mohammed will both take their turns in the next few days for a possible placement in the medal zone.
