The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially introduced Kim Lars Bjorkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, following the departure of Nora Häuptle. The Swedish coach, who has signed a two-year contract, expressed his enthusiasm and confidence in guiding the team to success during a press conference held at his unveiling. Bjorkegren replaces Häuptle, who took the helm of the Zambian national team after her contract with Ghana expired.
At the unveiling, the 43-year-old coach highlighted his commitment to player development, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent within the squad. “The most important aspect of my job is to visit all the players, watch games, and help them improve,” he stated.
Bjorkegren’s optimistic outlook for the Black Queens is rooted in his belief in the potential of Ghanaian players. “I see so much talent in this country, and I am really sure that in the short term, we have the potential to succeed. In the long term, I can guarantee we will be successful,” he remarked.
The new coach’s first challenge will come on February 21, when the Black Queens face Morocco in a friendly match. This game is crucial for the team’s preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for July. The Black Queens have been placed in Group C, where they will compete against formidable opponents including South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.
