The Ghana Cycling Federation concluded its 2024 calendar with a thrilling display of athleticism at the 10th National Road Cycling Championship, held at the Vicolis Olebu in Ablekuma. The event showcased a vibrant mix of emerging talents and seasoned cyclists, with both genders represented across various categories.
Among the standout performances was Mohammed Farrakhan Shaaban from River Pack, who dominated the men’s Junior category. Shaaban clocked an impressive 38 minutes and 10 seconds in the Individual time trial, setting the stage for his continued success.
He further solidified his status as a rising star by winning the Junior Road Race, completing the challenging 62.5-kilometer course in 1 hour, 47 minutes, and 14 seconds. His remarkable achievements have inspired many young cyclists across the nation.
Also in the men’s Under 23 Road Race, Sesi Emmanuel from Royal Stars emerged victorious, finishing the demanding 100-kilometer course in 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 29 seconds, with Amu Francis from FCG claiming the title in the men’s Elite Road Race, crossing the finish line in an impressive 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 20 seconds.
The women’s competition was equally fierce, with Annim Ellen from Team Sky shining brightly in the Under 23/Elite category. Ellen clinched victory in the Individual time trial with a time of 47 minutes and 3 seconds. She didn’t stop there; she continued her winning streak by dominating the Road Race, completing the 50-kilometer course in 1 hour and 46 minutes. Her performances not only highlighted her talent but also emphasized the increasing presence of women in the sport.
Expressing his satisfaction with the event, Shaban Mohammed, General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, praised the cyclists’ performances despite the challenges faced in organizing the championship.
“I’m very happy with the performance of our cyclists. Despite the challenges we faced in organizing the event, it was a huge success.”; Shaban Mohammed mentioned.
He further emphasized on the importance of educating club chairmen about the sport through seminars to enhance support for athletes. The success of this championship marks a significant milestone for cycling in Ghana, paving the way for future growth and development in the sport.
