Veteran Sports Presenter, Dr. Kweku Ofosu-Asare says to develop all sports disciplines especially football in the country would require some level of State involvement. For him, without such governmental interests and intervention which creates the requisite environment for sports to thrive, it will be extremely difficult for Ghana to make any significant progress in reviving sports which is the passion of the nation.
“We have six teams using the Accra Sports Stadium, look at the pressure on the stadium. So you see if you say you are staying aloof these things will come back to haunt you . If the State had been strong enough to say ”hang on”, Hearts of Oak we are giving you a deadline, develop your………… this, this person do that, if you are not going to do this thing you are not going to be part of the league”.
He called for a national policy that could be leveraged on to unearth budding sports talents as it is in the case in other countries.
“Let’s look at development at the younger stage, what sort of structures do we want to put in place, what sort of policy do we want to put in place as a country”
For him, countries such as Jamaica and Senegal have made strides in sports, as result of such deliberate attempts at stimulating interest in young people.
“You were talking about Senegal, in Senegal every Wednesday is a competition day in all schools. If you go to Jamaica, there is a strong policy for athletics and they are adhering strongly to them”.
