The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, September 5, 2024 in their AFCON 2025 qualifier opening. Despite the high expectations and home advantage, the match ended in disappointment for the Ghanaian fans. Both teams struggled to break the deadlock in the first half, setting up an intense and open game for the second half.

Mohammed Kudus managed to get Ghana’s only shot on target in the first half, but the Angolan defense proved to be impenetrable. The game marked a significant moment in Ghanaian football history, as it was the first time in 24 years that the Black Stars have lost a game at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. This long-standing unbeaten record added to the sting of the defeat.

Ghana’s goalkeeper, Ati-Zigi, put in a commendable performance with several crucial saves in the second half, but the team remained vulnerable to Angola’s counter-attacks. The Angolans’ patience paid off in the dying moments of the game, as poor defensive play from the Black Stars allowed Milson to score in the 90+3 minute, securing a victory for the Palancas Negras.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars will have a chance to redeem themselves when they face Niger on Monday, September 9, 2024. This upcoming match is crucial for the team to bounce back and keep their hopes of AFCON qualification alive. The players and fans will be hoping for a stronger performance to turn their fortunes around.

This defeat serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead in the road to AFCON 2025. It also highlights the unpredictability and excitement of football, where even the most formidable records can be broken.
