28th GUSA Games: A celebration of university sports and national development

The 28th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games kicked off on January 3, 2025, at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), under the inspiring theme “Repositioning University Sports for National Development.” This prestigious event has gathered student-athletes from 16 public universities across Ghana, creating an exciting atmosphere for competition and camaraderie over the course of fifteen days.

The opening ceremony of the GUSA Games was a colourful affair held at the New Examination Centre on the UCC campus, marking a historic first as it took place indoors and at night. This unique setting added a spectacular touch to the event, setting the stage for the fierce competitions ahead. From athletics to basketball and from football to table tennis, the games promise thrilling displays of athletic prowess and determination as teams vie for glory and pride for their respective institutions.

Women’s football has already made headlines, with the University of Ghana (UG) women’s team securing a thrilling 2-1 victory against the host, UCC, at the Robert Mensah Stadium. Other universities, including the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), have also showcased their talent in this competitive arena. The excitement continues across various sports, with athletes breaking records and striving for excellence, as the spirit of competition ignites the passion of participants and spectators.

Standout performances have emerged, particularly in tennis, where Tracy Ampah from KNUST claimed gold medals in both the women’s singles and doubles events.

Meanwhile, in Goalball, Emmanuel Dela Mensah from UG demonstrated his exceptional skills, leading his team to victory and earning the title of the tournament’s top scorer. The UCC Wildcats have also made their mark in basketball, showcasing their dominance on the court and solidifying their position as strong contenders for the gold medal.

As the athletics events commenced on January 13, fans were treated to thrilling races, with UG’s Bazaa Kurug Morries clinching victory with a time of 1:50.5. An athlete by name Seidu Salifu from UG displayed an outstanding performance to secure first place in the men’s 10,000 meters with an impressive time of 31:14.47.
