Ace sports journalist and President of Beach Soccer Ghana, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has voiced his support for Kofi Adams’ recent nomination as the new head of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in Ghana.
Ankrah believes that although Kofi Adams may not be a traditional sports administrator, his close ties to the sporting community and experience under former President Rawlings will bring valuable insights to the role.
He emphasised Adams’ understanding of the significance of sports in Ghanaian culture, stating, “He would know how important sports is to the national psyche and to Ghanaians.”
Ankrah noted that Adams has the backing of not only his political party but also a broader spectrum of support, suggesting that this goodwill will be beneficial as he embarks on his new responsibilities. “The positive thing is that he’s got support from the rank and file of not just his party, but beyond, which is a very good sign,” he remarked.
Expressing optimism about Adams’ leadership style, Ankrah stated that the new minister would leverage his extensive experience as a politician and grassroots organiser to make a meaningful impact. “I’m very optimistic. What he will do differently is that he’ll be himself and use the experiences he’s had to bring on board,” he said. This approach, according to Ankrah, may lead to innovative solutions for the challenges facing sports in Ghana.
The Beach Soccer president also highlighted the need for greater attention and support for beach soccer specifically, hoping that Adams’ leadership will bring the sport the recognition it deserves. “I would hope that beach soccer gets the support and attention that we deserve,” Ankrah added, signalling a desire for increased investment in lesser-known sports within the nation.
