Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has successfully guided Sudan to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a decade-long absence.

The team finished second in Group F during the qualifiers, amassing a total of 8 points. This achievement marks Sudan’s first appearance in the prestigious tournament since 2012, igniting hopes and dreams among fans and players alike.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Appiah expressed his unwavering ambition to secure the AFCON title in the upcoming tournament, which will be held in North Africa. “By God’s grace, we have qualified; we will prepare very well and ensure that we have a strong team before the AFCON,” he stated.

Kwesi Appiah, in his submission, drew inspiration from past underdog success stories, notably referencing Ivory Coast’s victory in the 2023 AFCON. Despite facing near elimination, Ivory Coast staged a dramatic comeback to lift the trophy.

“Nothing is impossible in football,” Appiah said. “Football has matured, and no team should be underestimated.” His words signal a belief that Sudan, like Ivory Coast in 2023, can defy the odds and surprise the continent with a strong showing.

The 2025 AFCON tournament is scheduled to begin on Sunday, December 21, 2025, with the final to take place on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
