Chris Hughton has been officially unveiled as the new manager of the Black Stars at the SG Mall in Kumasi.
The veteran manager was appointed after Otto Addo stepped down from the role following a promising, but unsuccessful FIFA World Cup campaign in the 2022 Qatar tournament.
The former Brighton Hove & Albion manager signed a 24-month contract which could potentially be extended should the Black Stars perform well under his leadership.
He dives straight into action in his new role as the Black Stars are scheduled to face off against Angola in a two-legged African Cup of Nations qualifying fixture.
Chris Hughton played for Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Brentford in a career where he made 361 appearances and scored 12 goals.
He also played for the Irish national team, making 53 appearances and scoring 1 goal.
As a manager, he boasts of significant experience having began his managerial career in 1977 as a caretaker manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
In a career spanning 46 years, he has managed clubs in the Championship and the English Premier League and should bring some much-needed pedigree and stability to an underperforming Ghana Black Stars squad.
The Irish Ghanaian born coach faces a fairly herculean task in turning things around for a squad that has consistently underperformed over the past couple of years. During his unveiling, he expressed his intention to build a winning squad, a statement which will potentially invite more scrutiny for his tenure.
Meanwhile, he has announced the squad for his first test as manager of the Black Stars, two games in the span of a week against Angola in the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers. Should he get good results in the games, it will be a good start for him, and one that could potentially begin to restore confidence in the Black Stars.
