President Nana Akufo Addo has sent a congratulatory message to Kurt Okraku on his election as the President of the Ghana Football Association.
In a tweet, President Nana Addo said, “I extend warm congratulations to Mr. Kurt E. S. Okraku on his election as the 24th President of the Ghana Football Association. He has earned the confidence and trust of the football fraternity, and his victory is well-deserved.”
He urged the entire nation to rally behind the new leadership to restore the image of the sport in the country
“Football remains the passion of our nation, and I urge all to rally behind him in realising his vision for the growth and development of #Ghana football.”
Mr. Okraku won the hotly contested election after two rounds of elections that failed to produce a clear-cut winner.
His closest contestant, George Afriyie, refused to stand for the third round, conceding defeat to Mr. Okraku.
However, the Electoral Commission (EC) asked that the delegates continue with the voting as a constitutional requirement. Mr. Okraku then polled some 93% of the votes in the third round and was consequently declared new GFA president.
His election comes after months of a normalization process following an expose on corruption in Ghana football. The election begins a new era of football in Ghana.
