President Akufo-Addo tasks Black Stars to win AFCON and reach World Cup semis

President Akufo-Addo has set an ambitious target for the Senior National Team, the Black Stars to win the upcoming AFCON tournament and reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

The President wants the Black Stars to end the nearly 40-year trophy drought and win the Cup for the Nation.

Speaking at a Breakfast meeting at the Banquet Hall of the Jubilee House to raise funds for the Black Stars, the President said the National Team has the quality to compete and win the AFCON and asked Corporate Ghana to support them financially.

 The last time the Senior National Team, the Black stars won the AFCON trophy was in 1982, thirty nine years ago. Next year, Ghana will participate in two major tournaments, AFCON and the World Cup.

The team needs adequate preparation to participate in these tournaments. The Black STARS are required to also play eight World Cup qualifying matches and two international friendlies in Europe.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports working with the GFA needs about $25 million to prosecute this agenda.

President Akufo-Addo on behalf of government donated $10 million to the team. He made a passionate appeal to corporate Organisations to help government raise the remaining $15 million to support the Senior National Team.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, noted that the Black Stars perform better under sponsorship. He gave an assurance that all money received will be put to judicious use.

Corporate organisations present were mainly from the mining and energy sectors. The Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif and his deputy, Evans Bobie, the GFA President Kurt Okraku and Samuel Osei Kufuor representing Black Stars Coach, C. K. Akunnor will lead the fundraising campaign.
