President John Mahama officially swore in Kofi Adams as the new Minister of Sports and Recreation on Friday, February 7, 2025. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jubilee House and was conducted in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution. The appointment comes after a thorough vetting process by Parliament, culminating in Adams’ approval by the Appointments Committee.
During the ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the urgency of revitalizing Ghana’s sports sector. He expressed his admiration for the role Adams is stepping into, acknowledging the monumental task ahead of him. “You have the monumental task of restoring Ghana to its pride of place in African and world sports,” Mahama stated. The President highlighted the current state of sports in the country as “completely unacceptable” for a nation with a rich sporting heritage.
President Mahama further called on Adams to implement transparency, professionalism, and modernity in the management of sports in Ghana as he urged him to focus on improving all sporting disciplines and to work closely with the Ghana Football Association.
“I expect that you concentrate on building up all the sports disciplines and I know the Ghana Football Association would be a good place to start to work to make sure that we return Black Stars to its glory days. The Honourable Kofi Idi Adams, Minister for Sports”; President Mahama affirmed.
