Ruben Amorim has been named as the new head coach of Manchester United and will start on November 11 after completing his duties with Sporting.
Amorim has signed a contract lasting until June 2027, with the option to extend for an extra year. His first game as United’s coach will be against Ipswich on November 24.
Manchester United paid Sporting an additional €1 million (£840,000) on top of his €10 million (£8.4 million) release fee to get him released from his 30-day notice period early.
Amorim is replacing Erik ten Hag, who was let go last month, and Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to lead the team until Amorim arrives.
Manchester United will play Chelsea at home on Sunday, and it’s not yet known if Van Nistelrooy will join Amorim’s coaching team. Amorim, who previously played for Benfica and Portugal, retired as a player in 2017 and started coaching at Braga two years later. He joined Sporting in March 2020 and has become one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, leading the team to two Primeira Liga titles.
Amorim has also won the Taca da Liga—the Portuguese League Cup—three times, twice with Sporting and once with Braga.
