The rugby league community in Ghana is grappling with a profound loss following the passing of Rosemary Sewornu, a trailblazer and an inspiring figure in the sport. As the inaugural captain of Ghana’s National Women’s Rugby League team and the team manager of the Nungua Tigers RLFC, Rosemary’s contributions have left an enduring impact on the growth and recognition of women’s rugby in the country.
Rosemary’s journey began as the only girl among five siblings, where she cultivated resilience and determination from an early age. Growing up in a household of brothers, she learned the importance of strength and teamwork, qualities that would later define her successful rugby career. Her competitive spirit and passion for sports propelled her to break through barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field.
As a foundational member of women’s rugby league in Ghana, Rosemary played a crucial role in shaping the sport’s early development. Her leadership and unwavering commitment were instrumental in creating opportunities for women to engage in rugby, paving the way for future generations of female athletes. In 2021, she made history by becoming the first captain of the Ghana National Women’s Rugby League team, a milestone that represented a significant victory for women in sports nationwide.
Under her captaincy, the Nungua Tigers RLFC achieved a historic feat by winning the first-ever Women’s Rugby League 13s Championship in 2023. Rosemary’s passion and dedication not only inspired her teammates but also solidified her legacy as a symbol of excellence in Ghana’s rugby league history.
