Hon. Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate for Sports & Recreation, has revealed his plans to upgrade the Winneba Sports College and transform it into a sports university. During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 30, 2025, Adams emphasized the urgent need to improve the quality of pitches at the college, which has long been plagued by inadequate infrastructure.
Adams pointed out that the college currently boasts four football pitches that are in deplorable condition, inhibiting the development of aspiring athletes. “We have about four football pitches in Winneba Sports College that are in deplorable states. We are working with the management of the Sports College to revamp them,” he stated.
The minister-designate’s vision extends beyond mere renovations, as he underscored the importance of upgrading the institution’s status. “Our intention is to turn it into a modernized University,” he declared, signaling a significant shift in the approach to sports education in the country. This transformation is expected to facilitate better training programs and offer a broader curriculum for students pursuing careers in sports.
Adams reiterated his commitment to modernizing the college, stating, “We will modernise Winneba sports college into a sports university.” This change is poised to position the institution as a leading center for sports education in Ghana, attracting both local and international students. The proposed upgrades are essential in addressing the pressing need for improved sporting facilities, which have been a long-standing challenge in the nation.
