WPL: Ampem Darkoa Retains Ghana Women’s Premier League Title

Techiman based Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club has been crowned champions of the 2022/2023 season after an intense match against a familiar foe Hasaacas Ladies. The match which was honoured at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Kumasi was watched by hundredtha of football fans at the venue ans thousands watching via social media. 

After both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half, it was all to play for in the second half. Doris Boaduwaa opened score with a dine header for the Doo girls in the 60th minute before Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah replied with an equalizer in the 84th minute. 

With the score at 1 apiece after the full time, it was time to usher in the exra time. After yet another stalemate, it was time for the dreaded penalties. In the 2021-2022 WPL final which was staged at the Accra Sports stadium, Ampem Darkoa won on penalties. One after the lady the ladies matched to the penalty area. After 4 round of kicks Ampem Darkoa emerged victorious  5-3 with Ophelia Amponsah the heeo of the night. Ampem Darkoa will therefore represent Ghana on the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier. 

Other individual awards which  were announced included 

Top Scorer of the season: Princess Owusu (Fabulous Ladies 17 goals) 

Defender of the season: Martha Appiah ( Berry Ladies) 

Goalkeeper of the season: Grace Banwa ( Hasaacas Ladies) 

Discovery of the season: Helena Alormenu (Essiam Socrates) 

Player of the season: Helena Obeng (Prisons Ladies) 

Coach of the season: Joe Nana Adarkwa
