South African legend Benni McCarthy has been appointed as the head coach of the Kenya national team. McCarthy, who is 47 years old and previously worked with Manchester United’s coaching staff, is stepping into the role with only a few week to prepare his squad for crucial World Cup qualifying matches later this month.

The Kenya Football Federation confirmed that McCarthy’s contract had been under discussion since December and has now been finalized. Joining him on the coaching staff are Vasili Manousakis, the former head coach of Richards Bay and Moeneeb Josephs, a well-known ex-goalkeeper for South Africa and Orlando Pirates.

This new coaching trio is set to debut as they lead the Harambee Stars into two vital encounters against Gambia and Gabon. While the exact dates and venues for these qualifiers are still pending, both matches are critical for Kenya’s aspirations to secure their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Kenya, currently is positioned fourth in Group F with five points from four matches, trailing the leaders, Ivory Coast, by five points. The upcoming matches present an opportunity for Kenya to improve its standing and move closer to World Cup qualification.

McCarthy brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously coached teams such as Cape Town City and AmaZulu. His coaching background is complemented by an impressive playing career, which includes winning the UEFA Champions League with Porto and holding the record for the most goals scored for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, with 31 goals.
