Ghanaian international Alidu Seidu has opened up about his tumultuous past, revealing how football became his lifeline, rescuing him from a life of crime and violence. Now a rising star in European football, Seidu’s journey from the streets of Kumasi to the pitches of France is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of sport.
Th defender, who currently plays for Stade Rennais, shared his story in a heartfelt interview with French media outlet Ouest-France, offering a glimpse into a past marked by hardship and redemption.
Born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana, Seidu’s early life was far removed from the glamour of professional football. Growing up in a challenging environment, he found himself drawn into a world of theft, vandalism, and small-time trafficking.

“We walked the streets with knives or machetes,” he admitted, recalling the dangers and uncertainties of his youth. His home life was equally fraught, with his father’s strict discipline and his mother’s tears leaving him feeling trapped and adrift. At times, he even ran away from home to escape the turmoil.

He also recalled a life-threatening incident where he was hospitalized after being attacked with a machete, which forced him to re-evaluate his life. “I lost a lot of blood; I couldn’t speak, and everyone thought I was going to die,” Seidu said.
Alidu Seidu’s life took a dramatic turn when his uncle intervened, recognizing the young boy’s potential and steering him toward football. “Fortunately, my uncle was there and pushed me towards football because he knew I had something,” Seidu said. With his uncle’s unwavering support, he began to channel his energy into the game of football.

His passion for football eventually led him to leave Ghana in 2019 to join Ivorian club JMG Abidjan, before moving to French side Clermont Foot in 2020 and later signing for Stade Rennais in January 2024. Seidu’s past experiences have given him a unique perspective on life, as he has learned to turn negative experiences into positive ones.
The 24 year old has made 15 appearances for the Black Stars since his debut in June 2022, scoring one goal. His inspiring story is a testament to the transformative power of football and a reminder that with hard work and determination, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams.
