The Ghana Boxing Federation, in collaboration with Trust Sports Emporium and the Ministry of Sports, has made history by launching the maiden Amateur Boxing League, set to debut on Friday, March 14, 2025.
This groundbreaking initiative, themed “Unleashing Boxing Stars,” seeks to provide a competitive platform for emerging boxers and foster the next generation of champions.
Attended by notable figures, including Sports Minister Kofi Adams and Ghana Olympic Committee President Ben Nunoo Mensah, the event underscored the significance of this league in the nation’s sports landscape.
President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Bernard Quartey, underscored the importance of the league.
“This league is not just about winning fights; it’s a strategic platform preparing for the biggest stages in the world, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.”
The Trust Sports Emporium, a leading sports facility in Ghana, has offered its state-of-the-art amenities to host the league, providing boxers with the resources and environment needed to excel.
For her part, Managing Director of Trust Sports Emporium, Madam Shirley Acquah-Harrison, highlighted the facility’s design, which prioritises nurturing talent in “lesser-funded” sports such as boxing, badminton, table tennis, swimming, and fencing.
“The launch of this league is a pivotal moment for Ghanaian sports, signaling a renewed focus on boxing and a commitment to developing champions who can represent the nation on the international stage. This initiative aligns with our vision of supporting underprivileged sports and empowering athletes to achieve their full potential,” said Madam Acquah-Harrison.
This collaborative effort between public and private sectors promises to revitalise Ghana’s boxing legacy, a once-thriving tradition that has waned in recent years.
With the Amateur Boxing League, the country aims to build a sustainable pipeline of talent, ensuring that future generations of boxers are well-equipped to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
