The Ghana Premier League made a thrilling return this weekend, with Hearts of Oak leading the charge in an action-packed round of matches.

The Phobians secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Young Apostles at the University of Ghana Stadium, marking their first league game since early February. The win propelled Hearts of Oak to third place on the league table, just a point behind leaders Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars.

The match also served as a poignant reminder of the league’s recent suspension, which followed the tragic killing of Asante Kotoko fan Nana Booley, whose memory was honoured with an emotional tribute before Kotoko’s match.

Asante Kotoko wasted no time in reclaiming their position at the top of the league with a commanding 2-0 victory over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium. The Porcupine Warriors are now level on points with Bibiani Gold Stars but sit in first place due to their superior head-to-head record. Before the match, a heartfelt tribute was paid to Nana Booley, a passionate Kotoko supporter whose tragic death in an act of hooliganism had cast a shadow over the league. The win not only showcased Kotoko’s resilience but also reignited their title ambitions.

Bibiani Gold Stars kept their title hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nations FC at Dun’s Park. The win keeps them in second place on 37 points, level with Kotoko, as the two teams continue to battle for supremacy. In other matches, Dreams FC and Aduana Stars played out a goalless draw at the Tuba Astro Turf on Sunday, while Karela United were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Basake Holy Stars at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.

Medeama SC staged a strong comeback to beat Bechem United 3-1 in an entertaining Ghana Premier League clash at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Sunday. In another encounter of goals, Stephen Amankona scored a hat trick to inspire Berekum Chelsea to a 3-1 victory against relegation-threatened Accra Lions at the Nana Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa.
