Hon. Issac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of football-related violence, in his address to Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Highlighting the tragic death of “Pooley,” a die-hard Asante Kotoko FC fan following the Kotoko vs. Nsoatreman Premier League clash.
Mr. Adongo emphasized that football in Ghana is often played on unsafe and unregulated grounds, which he referred to as “car parks” rather than proper stadiums. He stressed the urgent need for stricter protocols and licensing requirements for all football fields to ensure they are “fit for purpose.” He added that locations lacking basic amenities such as ambulances and adequate security should no longer be permitted to host matches.
While speaking, Adongo expressed his sadness over the lack of essential first aid facilities at many of these venues, calling them “death traps.” He warned that without proper measures, such incidents could continue to occur, leading to unnecessary loss of lives. Hon. Adonko further urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and relevant authorities to prioritize safety and preparedness before the next season begins.
He ended his by appealing to Parliament to take decisive action, ensuring that all football fields meet rigorous safety standards. He stressed that the love for football should not come at the cost of lives.
