Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has criticised goalkeeper Andre Onana, calling him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.
This statement came in response to Onana’s recent comments claiming that Manchester United is “way better” than their upcoming Europa League opponents, Lyon.
As the two teams prepare to meet in the quarter-finals, tensions are rising. Matic, who joined Lyon in 2024 after a successful spell at United, stressed the importance of respect in football. He stated:
“If it was Edwin van der Sar, Peter Schmeichel, or David De Gea saying that, then I would question myself.”
Despite the criticism, Onana responded on social media, maintaining that he respects all clubs and is focused on performing well for Manchester United.
The Europa League represents a vital opportunity for United, who are currently struggling in the Premier League, sitting in 13th place, to salvage their season. Onana expressed confidence in the squad while acknowledging Lyon as a strong opponent:
“We will go there with the winning mentality. It’s not our best season, but we still have something to win and we will go for it,” he remarked.
With both players eager to prove a point, the upcoming tie promises to be a high-stakes encounter for both sides.
