The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the tragic passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, also known as Olanrewaju ‘Success’ Segun, who collapsed during a professional bout in Accra and was later pronounced dead at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The incident occurred during an eight-round light heavyweight contest against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu, part of the Bel 7-Star Energy Drink Professional Boxing League.

According to a statement signed by GBA Director of Communications Mohammed Amin Lamptey, Olanrewaju started strongly but collapsed in Round 3 without receiving a punch.

Referee Richard Amevi quickly stopped the fight, and ringside medics and paramedics provided emergency care before rushing him to Korle Bu, where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arrival.

The GBA has overseen the necessary protocols, reporting the incident to the Korle Bu Police and coordinating with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC).

The body has been transferred to the main mortuary as authorities await an official autopsy report to determine the cause of death. Preliminary observations suggest that Olanrewaju may have suffered an induced coma.

The GBA has extended its condolences to the NBBC, Olanrewaju’s family, and the global boxing community. The authority acknowledged the risks of the sport and prayed for the safety of all fighters.

Olanrewaju was medically cleared by the NBBC before the fight, holding a certified professional license with an official record of 23 fights, 13 wins, and 8 losses.

The boxing community is in shock following the tragic loss of Olanrewaju, and the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks and dangers associated with the sport.

As the investigation into the cause of death continues, the GBA and the boxing community will be coming together to support Olanrewaju’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
