Ghanaian football legend Rev. Osei Kofi has been honoured in Spain for his role in Ghana’s historic match against Real Madrid in 1962. The former Black Stars and Asante Kotoko player was part of the Ghanaian team that played to a 3-3 draw against the Spanish club at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Rev. Osei Kofi was invited to Spain by former Leganés FC owners, Victoria Pavón and Felipe Moreno, to attend a La Liga match between Leganés and Real Madrid.

Rev. Kofi won two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles with the Black Stars and is one of the six surviving players from the squad that faced Real Madrid in 1962. The match featured football greats such as Ferenc Puskás and Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Victoria Pavón and Felipe Moreno, who visited Ghana in 2023 to establish a football academy, learned about the historic game and played a role in facilitating Rev. Kofi’s visit to Spain.

The 1962 match between the Black Stars and Real Madrid is regarded as a significant moment in Ghanaian football history. The 3-3 draw was considered a major achievement for the Ghanaian team, who had reportedly been promised a celebration if they avoided conceding 10 goals.

Rev. Kofi’s visit to Spain marked an opportunity to reflect on the match and his contributions to Ghanaian football.
