The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of Kelvin Aboagye, the General Manager of Elmina Sharks, in connection with an attack on a referee.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2025, during a Division One match between Elmina Sharks and Swedru All Blacks at the Nduom Sports Stadium in Elmina, Central Region.
The match, which was supposed to be a thrilling encounter, ended in chaos as the suspect, along with others, allegedly attacked the referee and several supporters at the end of the game. The referee sustained injuries during the attack.
Kelvin Aboagye, the General Manager of Elmina Sharks, is currently in police custody while authorities investigate further into the violent attack. Aboagye, who has been with the club for a significant period, is being questioned to gather more information about the attackers and their motives.
The police have expressed their commitment to bringing the culprits to justice and ensuring that the proper authorities handle this case with the utmost seriousness. Efforts are underway to apprehend any other individuals involved in the incident, promising a thorough investigation.
Reacting to the disturbing incident, the Ghanaian Football Association issued a statement, strongly condemning the attack on the referee and the disruption of the match.
The Association emphasised the need for maintaining a safe and secure environment for players, officials, and fans, calling for strict action against those who undermine the integrity and safety of the game.
The police have urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or information that might aid the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, football fans are expressing shock and outrage over the incident, calling for stricter regulations to prevent such occurrences in the future.
