CEO of Hasaacas Ladies and Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Evelyn Nsiah Asare has opened up on a potential meeting with Ghana’s first female Vice President, H.E. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The meeting she described aims to facilitate a stakeholders’ discussion on women’s sports, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in the industry.
According to Evelyn Nsiah Asare, the primary issue hindering the growth of women’s sports in Ghana is the perception that sports are a recreational activity rather than a profession. “When you go outside the country, apart from footballers, that a lot of people know there’s a professional footballer or maybe there’s a professional boxer,” she noted. She further emphasized that this mindset shift is crucial in recognizing the potential of women in sports and providing them with the necessary support and resources.
She also outlined some limited opportunities for women in sports, citing the scarcity of professional female athletes in Ghana. “In Ghana, there are only a few women that you can say they are professional athletes,” she remarked. With reference largely attributed to the lack of financial incentives, with many parents discouraging their children from pursuing careers in sports due to concerns about financial stability.
The meeting with Professor Opoku-Agyemang she say is also expected to address these challenges and explore ways to promote women’s sports in Ghana. Her efforts to raise awareness about the importance of supporting women in sports are crucial in driving positive change and creating opportunities for female athletes.
