The Minister of Communication and Digitization, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful says the management and operation of the newly acquired telecommunications network AIRTELTIGO will not be handled by herself or the ministry.

This follows an announcement by the Ministry of Communication that government has concluded negotiations with the parent companies of AirtelTigo, Bharti Airtel Ghana Holdings to transfer shares of the Company to the Government of Ghana.

The agreement was contracted following the announcement of the Company’s departure from the Ghanaian market, last year.

The Sector Minister, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful who signed on behalf of Ghana said government’s decision to take over AirtelTigo is to protect staff of the company from losing their jobs.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said AirtelTigo explained that the decision by its former owners to leave was as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is contrary to the widely held perception that mobile telecommunications network operators have benefited the most from the pandemic.
