The Zambian government on Monday issued a travel alert to truck drivers traveling to South Africa following increased attacks in that country.

The Zambia embassy in South Africa in an alert message advised all Zambian truck drivers scheduled to travel to South Africa between Sept. 1 and Sept. 4 not to do so until security was guaranteed.

In a statement, the embassy expressed concern on reports of some Zambian truck drivers being threatened with violence following a planned national wide work stoppage by the South African truck drivers.

According to information received by the embassy, some Zambian truck drivers have faced physical attacks and threats from their South African counterparts who were fighting for better conditions of service from their employers.

The South Africa Truck Drivers have since called for national wide work stoppage, starting from Sept. 2 and the Zambian embassy has warned truck drivers to observe maximum caution.
