Eight Killed In Clash Between ANGLOGOLD Security Personnel And Suspected Illegal Miners At Obuasi

At least eight (8) persons, All men, have been died at the mining town of Obuasi in the Ashanti region.

This resulted from a violent clash between some local youth and security detail of the Obuasi Mine of Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) in the early hours of Sunday, January 19, 2025.

A GBC’s reliable source at Obuasi alleged that, the clash followed a fierce resistance by the mine’s security detail made up of soldiers assigned to protect the mine when some youth from Obuasi attempted an invasion of part of AGA’s legal concession to undertake illegal gold mining in what is known in local balance as ‘galamsey’.

The source indicated that there was an exchange of gun fire among the two opposing groups at one of the underground entry points of the Mine near the AGA Health Foundation(previously AGA Hospital.

This led to instant deaths and serious injuries mostly from the side of the suspected intruders.

They were sent to both the AGA Health Foundation and Obuasi Government Hospital for either treatment or preservation.

At the time of filing this report, the reports gave conflicting figures of the casualties but the eight is confirmed.

Contacted official sources at AGA, an official, who pleaded for anonymity, said the Mine would very soon issue an official Statement meant to she’s light on the incident.
