Renowned Dutch footballer Memphis Depay, who holds a strong connection to Ghana through his Ghanaian father, recently opened up about his deep connection to his African roots. In an interview with ESPN, Depay emphasised the immense pride he feels in his Ashanti heritage, a revelation that has profoundly impacted both his personal and professional life.
Depay revealed that his journey to reconnect with his Ghanaian ancestry began at the age of 23, despite having briefly visited Ghana when he was just two years old. Raised primarily in the Netherlands and facing significant personal challenges, including growing up without his father, Depay’s early years were shaped by resilience and self-discovery. He shared that this period of his life built his character and prepared him for the profound experiences that awaited him in Ghana.
In reflecting on his heritage, Depay expressed how powerful it was to uncover his Ashanti roots. “The blood that I carry is from the Ashanti Region; actually, it’s a tribe in Ghana that is powerful; we are warriors,” he stated. He noted, “If I’m in Ghana, you have very beautiful places in Ghana, very rich people, but you also have very poor people.” This awareness has fuelled his desire to give back and support those less fortunate.
