82 Ghanaian police officers sue over promotions

By: Henrietta Afful

Some 82 Ghanaian police officers have sued the Attorney General, the Ghana Police Service, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for failing to promote them after they finished their studies under Ghana’s study leave with pay policy.

“All the Plaintiffs applied for the 2017/2018 Academic Year Study Leave with pay programme for Tertiary Courses ranging between two (2) to four (4) years.

“Each and every Plaintiff having qualified were selected and made to enter into the requisite Bond to serve the Police Service upon completion of their various courses for at least Five (5) years upon condition that the Bond would be entreated when breached” the writ of summons issued said.

Led by Deputy Inspector Kofi Osal, the officers say they were denied their deserved promotions as well as entry into police college after the successful completion of their studies during the 2017/2018 academic year.

The affected officers said the move was “unfair and unreasonable” and urged the Accra High Court to issue an order directing the Police Service to grant them the promotions.
