Cuban Ambassador to Ghana, Anette Chao Garcia, says the approach adopted by Cuban-trained doctors distinguishes them from all others, especially the manner in which they treat their sick patients.

She said Cuban doctors deal with their patients in an extraordinary manner.

“Cuban doctors have a different way of taking care of their patients. They are very close to their patients,” she noted.

The Ambassador said this in an interview on GTV Breakfast Show with Host, Kafui Dey.

She indicated that the ‘family doctor’ policy introduced by Fidel Castro makes their doctors unique in treating patients.

“It was a dream accomplishment of our Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro. He prepared a programme. The name was Family Doctor and the family doctor takes care of some families… this family doctor must take care of you and if you are an old person, they must come to your house every day,” she noted.

The diplomat added that the policy also covers pregnant women who are visited daily by their doctors to be given special prenatal care and this was intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fidel Castro supported the creation of the family doctor-and-nurse programme since the 1980s, ensuring that every neighbourhood of Cuba had access to primary healthcare.
