A Delegation from the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company, UETCL, has paid a working visit to the Ghana Grid Company, GRIDCO to study the best practices of electricity distribution in Ghana.
The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company has an ambitious target to expand electricity across its country; therefore, they are keen to learn how GRIDCO is able to achieve about 80 percent distribution in Ghana.
Uganda is currently operating a 54 percent distribution, with a circuit length of three thousand-385 kilometer of different capacities and 29 sub-stations.
The Acting Chief Executive of the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company, Taremwa Michael Kananura said Uganda shares a relatively similar history with Ghana, having had its first electricity generation plant in 1954.
He said Africa has got solutions to its current challenges with power generation; hence the visit to Ghana to share in comradeship.
He said the UETCL, was formed in 2001 and owned by the Ugandan government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development with 51 percent, while the Ministry of State for Privatization and Investment has 49 percent.
Mr. Kananura believes that the visit to GRIDCO will help the UETCL improve upon its power distribution.
The Board Chairman of the UETCL, Kwame Ejalu Ejuku said the UETCL is aware of the maturity of the Ghana transmission grid and its successes with regards to the extent of coverage, as well as management of its telecom assets.
The Board Chairman of GRIDCO, Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere who welcomed the delegation said ”there is a lot the UETCL can learn from GRIDCO in connection with power distribution”.
He said GRIDCO over the years has been able to improve upon its power distribution compared to other African Countries, a feat, which he said is worth emulating.lectricity Transmission Company, Taremwa Michael Kananura said Uganda shares a relatively similar history with Ghana, having had its first electricity generation plant in 1954.
