President Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians of a brighter future as the economy makes a positive turn, recording a growth rate of 4.2 percent in the first quarter of the year.
Speaking at this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations at the Black Stars Square, he said the economy is getting better and the gains will be sustained.
He charged the Muslim Community and Ghanaians at large to have confidence in the government as it works assiduously to sustain the growth.
President Akufo-Addo also entreated Muslims to be measured in the celebration to ensure that no life is lost.
Eid ul-Adha is an Islamic festival used to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim, also known as Abraham, to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son. Muslims around the world observe this event amid merry making, slaughtering of goats, sheep and cows.
During the celebration of Eid ul-Adha, many Muslims travel to Mecca and the surrounding area in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. People also give money to enable poorer members of their local community and around the world to eat a meat-based meal. As per tradition, the celebration began with prayers led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and other dignitaries joined in the prayers.
President Akufo-Addo said Ghana continues to be a haven of peace in the stormy waters of Africa and is applauded across the world for its religious tolerance adding that Allah has been merciful to the nation.
He said the country is gradually navigating through the turbulence, showing signs of recovery. He assured that Ghana will be better.
“As you can see, we are beginning to navigate the turbulence with our economy growing by 4.2 percent in the first quarter of 2023. The currency has seen some stability lately and through the gold for oil program, we are seeing the stability in Petroleum prices as well. All of which are helping to bring inflation down.”
“Things are getting better and will get better. I can assure you. Muslim faithful, in the spirit of Eid, I ask to continue to support your government to deliver the needed progress and prosperity”.
The President while outlining some initiatives of the government especially in education, admonished the Muslim Community to prioritize education especially among females.
“You have every right to celebrate today, by all means celebrate, but be cautious. Your life matters to the nation and your family. I will be sad to hear that one life was lost as a result of reckless celebration”.
“This country has produced Muslims Vice President. It should thus be clear to Muslim parents that there is value in educating their children. I encourage you to take advantage of our progressive policies in the education sector to educate your children both male and female”.
The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu prayed for the government and the peace and stability of the country.
The occasion was graced by the German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull among other dignitaries.
Two sheep were slaughtered as sacrifice for the occasion.
