Finance Ministry proposes 88% increase in road tolls

The Ministry of Finance has proposed an 88% increase in Road Tolls to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for reintroduction of the Toll’s Amendment Fees and Charges.

Government in the 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy hinted of reintroducing the road tolls with the Ministry of Finance seeking to amend the fees and charges Act 2022, Act 1080 through a Legislative Instrument.

In a memo, the Finance Ministry said it has initiated steps to provide a foundational rate for tolling of roads and Highways as part of the amendment of the Act.

Government in the 2022 Budget announced the cessation of the collection of the road tolls to be replaced with the introduction and implementation of the Electronic Transfer Levy which popularly became known as E-Levy.
