A Communications Expert, Naa Atswei Nee-Okpey says the perennial flooding of Accra most often exposes Ghana‘s vulnerabilities and unpreparedness towards natural disasters.

She said the amount of rubbish that litters the streets after a downpour leaves much to be desired.

Speaking on GTV Breakfast Show on Friday November 11, 2022, Madam Naa Atswei Nee-Okpey said there are instances where people have to navigate through heaps of refuse that have found their way onto the streets after a downpour.

“While having to deal with rising water levels, traffic as well as rain, people have to deal with refuse too” she lamented.

Ms Nee-Okpey expressed her concerns on the issue of waste disposal in the country and called for serious action to be taken to tackle the issue.

“The streets today, have actually shamed all of us. Each one of us” she said.

Her comments follow an hour and a half downpour that happened on Thursday, November 10, 2022 causing most areas in Accra to flood and leaving the streets inundated with filth. This brought about heavy vehicular traffic especially on the Mallam-Kasoa road.

A lot of people had to abandon their cars and find their way home on foot as the roads were inaccessible.
